Miles Johnston Glitch Art

Overview
Miles Johnston creates stunning hand-drawn graphite drawings that exemplify glitch art aesthetics. His work explores psychological transformation through surreal portraits and figurative imagery, combining traditional pencil techniques with digital-age distortion concepts.

Artist Statement
Johnston was born in the UK in 1993 and spent early childhood in Brunei, Borneo - an experience that shaped his belief that no absolute “normal” exists. He studied at the Swedish Academy of Realist Art at age 18 and now works as an instructor there while developing his own artistic practice.
His artistic philosophy centers on using the human form as a vehicle to attempt to process the intensity and profound strangeness of the collective human experience. Rather than pursuing literal representation, Johnston depicts surreal qualities of human subjectivity, aiming to create emotionally resonant works.
Artistic Approach
Key Themes:
- Psychological transformation in portraiture
- Internal emotional states during crucial life moments
- Distortion and metamorphosis as metaphors for consciousness
- Surreal abstraction grounded in human experience
Johnston works primarily in graphite and oils. His transformations series - featuring concepts like “Deform. Divide. Attract. Recur” - presents subjects undergoing visible psychological shifts. His work has gained international recognition, culminating in a solo exhibition at Last Rites Gallery in New York in 2018.
